It’s a potent time, our shoulder season between winter’s grudging farewell and the full-fledged arrival of spring. Even with snow on the ground and a bite in the air, there’s no denying the tantalizing presence that looms on the horizon. The light itself is proof — somehow softer and brighter, it heralds awakening. And so there are stirrings, in the hectic flutter of nesting birds; in the forced shifting of our moods, as if we were being firmly nudged from drowsing; in the green things above and below ground preparing to literally burst forth. It’s with green things in mind that the more enterprising among us are at the ready, prepared to make the most of a short but sweet growing season. Like Kat Mayerovitch, who gets a jump on planting with a timely story about the “Grow a Row” program for local non-profit Willing Hands, and explores how nurturing a garden can nurture our community in turn.
