It wasn’t until I spent the better part of a year in spandex and sweatpants that I fully appreciated the value of my relationship to fashion and getting dressed.
Somewhere around the doldrums of late winter/early spring, with vaccines on the horizon but still out of reach, I began to find joy in getting dressed every day, even if only for myself. It began with a new pair of gold loafers I wanted to break in. If I’m going to wear the shoes, I thought, I might as well wear a whole outfit. Putting myself together that day, I felt a piece of my confidence restored, a piece of my identity. I was no longer getting dressed for work with only a few minutes before I had to rush out the door. I could contemplate my closet, coffee in hand, and run through several varieties of an outfit. It felt so good, it evolved into a regular practice.
There’s something magical and joyful about using clothing as a way to wear your personality on the outside. The spirit of self-expression is a driving factor behind the thrill of a trip to White River Junction’s newest vintage clothing shop, Nancy the Girl. For this week’s issue, Junction’s Courtney Cook sat down to chat with shop owner Nancy Heyl in “Nancy the Girl Grows Up.”

Nancy the Girl Grows Up
No matter which entrance you use, White River Junction's Tip Top building feels like a journey through the looking glass. The many-colored hallways beckon with possibilities: to the left is a stairwell offering photogenic views from every landing; straight ahead is a wide, brick, corridor lined with mixed-media collages; and still further in is a sunshine-filled former loading dock with a painted on-ramp. Art objects are everywhere: paintings, sculptures, light fixtures. There is a sense of suspended animation, as though you’ve interrupted a creative romp. You have an instinct to signal that you, too, are a friend of the arts, that you come in peace and gladness. (read more)
